Women Peace and Security

The Women, Peace and Security Agenda is comprised of United Nations Security Council Resolutions mandating all UN member states for the effective integration of gender considerations in all areas of peacebuilding, security and development. It’s four pillars consist of participation, protection, prevention and relief and recovery. Recent efforts in relation to WPS emphasize the localization of the agenda, recognizing the need to customize its implementation directly in correlation with needs and context in which it is being implemented.

Over 100 countries having created a National Action Plan on WPS. There is a recognition that for the WPS agenda to succeed that its implementation needs to be multi-sectoral, including health, aid, and justice to name a few. Experts engaging with the agenda need to truly understand the intersection of gender dynamics, conflict and fragile contexts, gendered vulnerabilities and needs and international law.
